Just read about Mircea Popescu, this Romanian Bitcoin billionaire who died back in 2023 off Costa Rica. The guy was seriously early to Bitcoin - like, one of the actual early adopters. He even created his own exchange called MPEx which got him into it with the SEC.
What's wild is how much he was posting - apparently 70 to 100 blog posts per month. Though I heard a lot of his content was pretty controversial, some of it had racist and sexist stuff in it. Still, you can't deny his impact on the space.
Popescu supposedly held over 1 million BTC, which is insane to think about. He was also the one threatening to dump a million coins if Bitcoin changed the block size from 1MB to 2MB. Imagine having that much power over the market.
The thing that gets me is nobody really knows what happened to all his Bitcoin after he died. If his wallet keys are gone, those coins could just be stuck forever. That amount of lost BTC could actually move the price. And yeah, BTC is down about 1.28% today at $74.52K, but that's just normal volatility.
Mircea Popescu's story is one of those crypto legends that's half fascinating, half dark. Early adopter, controversial figure, massive holdings - and then just gone. Makes you think about how fragile this whole thing is sometimes.
