Just looked into what you actually can and can't get with EBT and honestly, it's more limited than I thought. Like, everyone assumes food stamps cover everything at the grocery store, but nope - there's a whole list of stuff that doesn't qualify.

So here's the thing: hot foods are completely off limits. That includes your deli chicken, pizza, anything they've heated up or prepared right there in the store. Same deal with cold prepared stuff like salads, sandwiches, or those pre-made platters. Basically if the store made it, you can't use EBT on it.

But people always ask me about frozen dinners - turns out those ARE actually covered since they're uncooked when you buy them. The rule is specifically about foods hot at the point of sale, so frozen meals, frozen vegetables, that kind of thing works fine with benefits.

What gets me is all the other random stuff excluded too. No vitamins or supplements (they have to have that label), no pet food, no household supplies, cleaning products, hygiene items, cosmetics - none of that. Cigarettes and alcohol obviously don't qualify either.

I think around 41 million people are on SNAP getting roughly $202 per person monthly on average, so this stuff actually affects a lot of households trying to stretch their budget. Makes you realize how specific the rules are about what counts as eligible food versus everything else. The restrictions around prepared foods and frozen dinners versus hot foods can get confusing when you're actually at the checkout.
