Just looked at some housing data and wow, the cost to actually live the American Dream in certain cities is wild. San Jose is leading the pack at $319K annual household income needed - that's insane. The mortgage alone runs you over $9K a month, and groceries aren't cheap either at over $10K yearly.

San Francisco and San Diego follow close behind, both requiring $297K and $242K respectively. What's interesting is how the most expensive city in the us for achieving that dream shifts depending on whether you're looking at total living costs or just mortgage payments. LA and NYC are pricey too, but the numbers tell a different story than you'd expect.

Long Beach, Seattle, Oakland - they're all hovering in that $200K+ range for household income. Even Boston and DC, which you might think are more affordable, still need $199K and $187K. The methodology used the 50/30/20 budgeting rule, so they basically doubled the actual cost of living to account for savings and discretionary spending.

If you're looking at the most expensive city in the us to achieve the American Dream, it's clear California dominates the list. The mortgage costs are the real killer - we're talking $4K-$9K monthly depending on location. Makes you wonder if the dream is even realistic in these places anymore, or if people are just settling for less.
