Been researching where is the most inexpensive place to live in the US, and honestly found some pretty solid options that don't require you to sacrifice safety. There's this analysis that looked at 150 of the safest cities and filtered them by total cost of living, and the results are kind of eye-opening.
Ohio seems to dominate the list for affordable living - like 7 cities made the top 15, which is wild. New Philadelphia caught my attention first: around 17k people, home values hovering near $186k, and monthly mortgage sitting at roughly $1,100. The violent crime rate is super low at 0.69 per 1,000. San Elizario in Texas is even cheaper for housing if you're willing to go there - homes around $167k with mortgages under $1,000.
What's interesting is the trade-off pattern. New Ulm, Minnesota has an incredibly low violent crime rate (0.29 per 1,000) but slightly higher property crime. Columbus, Indiana's got a bigger population if you want that but still keeps costs reasonable at around $40k annually. And if you're looking at places with the best livability scores, Edwardsville, Illinois and Trenton, Michigan are hitting 86-90 range while staying relatively affordable.
The common thread? Most of these towns are keeping annual living costs between $35-45k, which is pretty reasonable. If you're trying to figure out where to actually move without breaking the bank, these smaller cities seem to hit that sweet spot of being both inexpensive and actually safe communities.
