Just looked at some 2024 utility data and it's wild how much it varies by state. Based on a DOXO report from earlier this year, the average utility cost ranges from like $255 a month in Mississippi to over $600 in Hawaii. That's a massive difference when you think about it annually.
I was curious because I noticed my bills seemed high compared to what people in other states pay. Turns out the average utility cost across the country hovers around $350-360 monthly, but some states are way above that. Connecticut, Maine, and New Jersey are hitting $460+ per month. Meanwhile, states like Georgia, Indiana, and Mississippi are staying under $300.
What's interesting is the pattern - Northeast and Alaska tend to have higher average utility costs, probably because of heating needs and energy prices. Southern states generally sit below the national average. If you're thinking about relocating, this is definitely something to factor in. A couple hundred dollars difference in monthly utility costs adds up quick over a year. Worth checking before you move.
