just realized i've been overpaying for beach vacations when there are actually solid affordable options all over the west coast. been looking into this for summer and honestly surprised how many places offer good vibes without breaking the bank.

oceanside california is one of those gems near camp pendleton - tons of free stuff like surfing, fishing off the pier, and you can catch whale watching when they're migrating. they've got actual museums too if you're into that, including one dedicated entirely to surfing which is kind of hilarious but also cool.

huntington beach is supposedly way cheaper than la or santa monica and way less crowded. the nickname is "surf city usa" for a reason - consistent waves, wide beaches, chill atmosphere. you can rent a wetsuit and take lessons without spending crazy money. plus they have this surfing walk of fame thing.

if you have a dog, cannon beach in oregon is apparently perfect. dogs are welcome on the beach and there are pet-friendly hotels everywhere. haystack rock is supposed to be absolutely stunning and you get like four miles of walkable shoreline. the arts scene there is legit too.

ruby beach in washington sounds wild - dramatic sea stacks, reddish sand, tide pools full of starfish. way more rugged than the polished beaches down south. hiking trails and no extra fees beyond the national park pass which covers multiple beaches.

alki beach near seattle is probably my top pick though. free views of the olympic mountains and puget sound, you can bring a picnic, build a fire pit, just vibe. people think seattle was founded in a coffee shop but it was actually here lol. food is nearby but honestly the best parts are free.

anyone else been to these west coast beach towns? thinking this might actually be doable on a real budget
