just fell down a rabbit hole looking at the most expensive bag collections and honestly, some of these price tags are absolutely insane. like, we're talking millions of dollars for a piece of leather.
started with elizabeth taylor's gold and diamond evening bag from 2011 - 218k for a woven gold clutch with diamond lettering. iconic, obviously, but then chanel entered the chat. there's this diamond forever bag designed by karl lagerfeld with 334 actual diamonds in the clasp. 261k. then they have an elongated classic flap clutch from 1989 that somehow costs 300k on 1stdibs. it's literally just a slim black lambskin bag but apparently minimalism hits different when you're paying six figures.
hermes though? they're playing a completely different game. the faubourg birkin is 400k and it's basically a tiny replica of their storefront on your shoulder. but wait, they also did a collab with ginza tanaka, a japanese jeweler, and created a birkin with 2,182 diamonds embedded into it. 1.9 million dollars. like, at that point are you even using it or just staring at it?
even celebrities are getting custom versions. li bingbing had a lana marks cleopatra clutch made with her name in pink gold and pink diamonds - another 400k piece. apparently helen mirren and angelina jolie carry these too but not the most expensive bag versions.
the wild part? these aren't just expensive because they're designer. they're expensive because they become investment pieces, auction items, status symbols. some people genuinely collect them like art. makes you wonder what the most expensive bag will cost in another decade
