Alibaba (NYSE:BABA) is making it clear it does not want to be left behind in the next phase of AI. The company has introduced Qwen3.5, a new model designed for what it calls the agentic era, where AI systems can handle more complex tasks with less human input.
According to Alibaba, Qwen3.5 represents a meaningful jump from the previous 3 series, with stronger text and multimodal abilities. It can process text, images and video, and generate responses across those formats. The company is open-sourcing Qwen3.5-397 billion-A17 billion, also known as Qwen3.5-Plus, and says it delivers performance comparable to the much larger Qwen3-Max model, which exceeds 1T parameters, while reducing deployment costs by up to 60%.
Alibaba is positioning the model as enterprise-ready, capable of reasoning, writing code and managing agentic workflows. The timing is important. Competition in China is intensifying, with ByteDance, Baidu and DeepSeek all advancing their own AI systems.
