Wang Yi Had a Phone Call with Bahraini Foreign Minister Zayani
On April 2, 2026, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, held a phone call with Zayani, the rotating chairman of the Gulf Cooperation Council and Bahrain’s Foreign Minister, by mutual agreement.
Zayani introduced the latest developments in the Middle East situation and Bahrain’s position, stating that the security of Gulf countries is facing severe challenges, navigation through the Strait of Hormuz is obstructed, and Bahrain is willing to play a role through the United Nations Security Council to resolve the strait navigation issue. Bahrain hopes to strengthen communication and coordination with China.
Wang Yi clarified China’s principled stance against aggression and in favor of peace. He stated that China and Pakistan recently issued a five-point initiative to restore peace and stability in the Gulf and Middle East regions, which includes calls to stop attacks on civilians and non-military targets, ensure the security of the Strait of Hormuz, and restore normal navigation.
A ceasefire and peace are the common calls of the international community. The actions of the UN Security Council should help ease the situation, end the war, and resume negotiations, rather than endorse illegal warfare actions or escalate the conflict.
As a permanent member of the Security Council and a responsible major country, China is willing to work with Bahrain to promote the cessation of hostilities, restore peace, achieve lasting regional stability, and safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries, especially small and medium-sized nations.
