Just went down a research rabbit hole on retirement planning and found something interesting about whether you can retire with 3 million. Turns out the answer really depends on where you live.
I looked at a detailed breakdown of 45 states and the numbers are pretty wild. In cheaper states like West Virginia, Oklahoma, and Kansas, $3 million could stretch for 50+ years with Social Security factored in. But move to New Jersey or Maryland and you're looking at closer to 32-33 years. That's a massive difference for the same amount of money.
The study used a pretty solid methodology - they looked at cost of living, average Social Security income, and applied the 50/30/20 budget rule to figure out what comfortable retirement actually means in each state. Turns out housing and overall expenses vary way more than most people realize.
So can you retire with 3 million? Definitely yes, but location is everything. The cheaper Midwest and South states give you way more runway. Meanwhile, if you're thinking about retiring to the Northeast or Mountain West, that same $3 million gets eaten up faster by higher living costs.
If you're planning retirement with 3 million saved up, honestly worth running these numbers for your specific state. The difference between retiring at 55 versus 65 in some places comes down to just picking the right location. Pretty eye-opening stuff.
