Just been looking into what dogs actually cost and honestly I'm shocked at the range. Like everyone thinks buying a puppy is just the purchase price but that's only half the story. Been researching breed prices of dogs and the lifetime healthcare stuff is wild.

So I found out a Manchester Terrier runs you maybe 500 to 1000 bucks upfront but then you're looking at like 10,500 in vet bills over their lifetime because they get cataracts and joint issues. A Dachshund is cheaper to buy (800-1500) but their back problems alone could cost you 7,300 in healthcare. That's insane.

Then there's the cheaper breeds that don't break the bank as much. Redbone Coonhounds are only 500-800 to buy and their health costs are way lower at like 1,500 total. American Foxhounds similar story - 500-700 purchase price, 1,500 in medical costs. Those actually seem reasonable if you're looking for a dog that won't drain your wallet.

The thing that got me was realizing dog prices vary so much depending on the breed. You can get a Treeing Walker for 400-800 or drop 2000-5000 on a Field Spaniel. And some of the expensive ones still have crazy health bills.

I think what surprised me most is how many breeds have these genetic health issues that just rack up costs over time. Makes you wonder if adoption might be smarter than buying when you see these numbers.

Anyone else shocked by how much dogs actually cost when you add everything up?
