Just came across some pretty eye-opening data on traffic safety across major US cities. Turns out certain places have significantly higher rates of fatal accidents, and it's worth knowing which ones if you're planning to drive there or considering a move. The research analyzed the 50 largest cities looking at factors like drunk driving incidents, distracted driving, speeding-related crashes, and overall fatality rates per capita. Albuquerque, New Mexico topped the list as having the most dangerous road conditions, with the highest rates of distracted driving fatalities and some of the worst overall crash statistics. Memphis and Detroit also ranked near the top for their alarming accident numbers. What's interesting is that cities with the worst drivers aren't always the ones you'd expect geographically. Texas cities like Dallas and Fort Worth both made the top ten, along with Arizona's Tucson and Phoenix. Kansas City stood out for having the highest speeding-related fatal crashes. The methodology looked at five years of data from 2017-2021, measuring fatal accidents per 100,000 residents across different categories - total crashes, drunk driving incidents, distracted driving, speeding violations, and fatalities. Memphis had the highest number of drunk driving fatalities, while Albuquerque led in distracted driving deaths. If you're curious about cities with the worst drivers in your region, the data shows insurance rates and premiums tend to reflect these risk levels. Insurance companies use driving behavior metrics to calculate what you'll pay, so your location and driving habits both matter. The research highlights why maintaining a clean driving record is crucial if you want better insurance rates. Interesting stuff to consider whether you're a regular driver or just someone who cares about road safety statistics.
