Just stumbled on some interesting research about affordable US towns, and honestly, finding places that nail both low cost and safety is rarer than you'd think. Turns out there's a solid cluster of cities with the lowest crime rate that also won't drain your wallet—especially in the Midwest. The data pulled together 150 of the safest US cities (population 10k+) and ranked them by total cost of living, and the results are pretty eye-opening.

Ohio dominates the list with 7 entries in the top 15. New Philadelphia leads the pack with an annual cost of living around $35,500 and violent crime rates under 0.70 per 1,000 people. You're looking at average home values in the $186k-$313k range across these cities with the lowest crime rate, with monthly mortgages typically between $1,100-$1,850. Other standouts include New Ulm, Minnesota (barely any violent crime at 0.29 per 1,000) and San Elizario, Texas (crazy low violent crime at 0.10 per 1,000). Even the pricier entries like Edwardsville, Illinois stay under $45k annually and maintain solid safety metrics.

The methodology checked FBI crime data, Census info, and Zillow valuations through early 2025, so it's pretty solid. If you're seriously considering relocating somewhere affordable without sacrificing safety, these cities with the lowest crime rate might be worth researching. Definitely beats trying to find that combo in major metros.
