Just figured out how to actually use my Chase rewards points without feeling like I'm wasting them. So I've been sitting on these Chase Ultimate Rewards for months and finally decided to check out the gift card options instead of just cashing back. Logged into my account and honestly there's way more selection than I expected - like almost 200 different brands you can pick from. Amazon, Starbucks, Airbnb, all that stuff.
The process is pretty straightforward if you ask me. You go to the Earn/Use section, click gift cards, browse what they've got, and pick your amount. A $25 Chase gift card costs 2,500 points which is basically 1 cent per point - same as cash back usually. But here's the thing I didn't know: sometimes they actually run sales on these gift cards. When that happens you get better value, like 1.11 cents per point on a 10% discount. That's when it's actually worth doing instead of just buying the card directly.
Honestly though if there's no sale happening, I'd probably just buy the gift card straight from the store and use my points for cash back instead. You get new rewards from the purchase that way and way more options than what Chase offers. Plus no waiting around for shipping. But if you catch one of those gift card sales? That's when redeeming your Chase rewards for a gift card actually makes sense. Worth checking the app every so often to see what's on discount.
