Just had someone ask me about rental car insurance at the counter, and honestly, it's one of those decisions where people either overpay or take unnecessary risks. So I looked into what Dave Ramsey actually recommends on this, since he's pretty straightforward about money stuff.
Here's the thing about rental car insurance that most people miss: you might already be covered. Dave Ramsey's take on car rental insurance is basically don't pay for something you don't need. According to Ramsey Solutions, your existing auto insurance typically covers you the same way on a rental as it does on your own vehicle. So if you've got solid comprehensive coverage, decent liability limits, and health insurance for medical expenses, you're probably good to skip the rental company's offer.
But here's where it gets interesting. Ramsey doesn't say never buy it. He points out specific situations where rental car coverage actually makes sense. If your policy specifically excludes rentals, or you've got a really high deductible, then yeah, grab the coverage. Same goes if you're uninsured or traveling for business - your personal policy might not cover commercial trips anyway.
I found his suggestion about non-owner insurance pretty useful too. If you rent cars regularly but don't own one, non-owner policies can be cheaper and give you better protection than what the rental company charges each time. It's worth comparing.
So what would Dave Ramsey tell you to do? Check your own insurance policy first. See what's actually covered. The rental car insurance pitch is designed to make you worried, but most people with decent coverage already don't need it. Just make sure you're not skipping it when you actually should have it - that's the balance Ramsey emphasizes. It's about being smart, not just cheap.
