So I've been looking into the battery recycling space and it's actually way more interesting than most people realize. With all these electric vehicles hitting the road, we're basically sitting on a massive materials goldmine that nobody's really talking about.



The thing is, when EV batteries reach end of life, they don't just disappear. Companies are actively breaking them down to extract lithium, nickel, cobalt, and other critical metals. We're talking potentially hundreds of millions of batteries needing recycling over the next few years as EV adoption accelerates globally.

Li-Cycle Holdings is probably the most visible play here. They just got a $375 million loan commitment from the US Department of Energy and launched their first major processing line in Germany. These guys are scaling fast - their German facility alone will handle 30,000 tonnes of battery material annually when fully operational.

Then there's Umicore, which operates recycling facilities across the US, China, Belgium, and Germany. They've got the infrastructure advantage and seem positioned to capture serious volume as EV battery recycling companies gain more market share.

Ganfeng Lithium is interesting because they're one of the world's largest lithium producers but they're also getting into the recycling side. They've got operations across Africa, Australia, Argentina, and Mexico with a recycling project underway in China. Basically hedging their bets across the entire supply chain.

American Battery Technology is doing something different - they developed closed-loop recycling that can separate and purify critical materials from used batteries. Their Nevada facility processes around 20,000 metric tons of battery feedstock yearly.

RecycLiCo Battery Materials is the riskier play here, trading at $0.25, but they're focused on converting cathode scrap into battery precursors. Early stage but the concept has legs.

What's wild is even Apple and BYD are getting involved. Apple committed to using 100% recycled cobalt in all their batteries by 2025, and BYD started transforming old batteries into energy storage systems back in 2020 through partnerships.

The macro picture is pretty clear - EV battery recycling companies are going to become essential infrastructure. We're not just talking about environmental responsibility here, we're talking about securing access to critical materials. That's real economic value. If you're looking for exposure to this trend, there's definitely a range of options from large-cap players to smaller specialists.
