So I did this deep dive comparing steak prices across five major chains a while back and honestly the differences are wild. Everyone's always asking where the cheapest place to get steak actually is, and the answer isn't as obvious as you'd think.
Started at Aldi because everyone says it's cheap. Grabbed their Choice Angus sirloin at $7.99 a pound and ribeye at $12.29 a pound - pretty solid. Threw in some potatoes, broccoli, and butter and got a full dinner for four people at $5.83 per meal on the ribeye. That's actually really solid value.
Then I checked Walmart and was surprised. Their sirloin came in at $12.94 a pound but the total meal cost was way lower - only $4.70 per person for sirloin. Like, that's cheaper than a McDonald's Happy Meal. For filet mignon specifically, Walmart had the best deal at $21.82 a pound, though you're only getting enough for two people really.
Target was pricier across the board. Their sirloin maxed out at $30.22 per package and ribeye at $22.80. The cheapest place to get steak if you want premium cuts at Target would be their sirloin option, but you're looking at nearly $5 per person minimum.
Whole Foods was expensive as expected - ribeye running $27.99 a pound. Skip it if you're looking for budget steak.
Costco threw me off because the per-pound prices looked good but you're buying in bulk. Their sirloin was $8.19 a pound but that's five steaks at once. When you actually do the math on what a single meal costs, Costco ends up being pricier unless you're feeding a crowd regularly.
The real cheapest place to get steak for a family dinner? Walmart for sirloin, hands down. One shopping trip, $18.80 total, feeds four people. But if you're near an Aldi and want ribeye, that's your move at $23.34 for the whole meal. Honestly the biggest factor is just what's available near you and whether you want to hit multiple stores. The cheapest place to get steak depends on your cut preference too - sirloin, ribeye, or filet all have different winners.
