Being a wealthy family’s daughter-in-law is hard. Wang Xiaofei’s newlywed wife, Ma Xiaomei, has truly gotten a firsthand lesson in the wealthy elite’s “soft-handed” tactics.

She thought that marrying in would mean living in a big villa, enjoying an easy life, being pampered, having everything taken care of—plus an honorable, respectable status. But she only realized after actually marrying in: the gate to a wealthy family is easy to enter, yet none of the good stuff ever really comes her way.
Ma Xiaomei said openly that she simply couldn’t live in her mother-in-law Zhang Lan’s big villa. The reason was rather absurd—there was literally nowhere for her to put her feet.
In a live broadcast, Ma Xiaomei revealed that in that spacious mansion with hundreds of square meters, every room had been reserved for little Yueer and little Linlin. Wang Xiaofei’s former bedroom had long been turned into a walk-in closet, and the rest of the space was stuffed with fitness equipment and audio-visual devices.
With such a huge house, they couldn’t squeeze out even half a room to settle the new daughter-in-law. This wasn’t a case of “not enough rooms”—it was clearly about enforcing rules.
When Ma Xiaomei returned to Beijing with her son, Zhang Lan neither picked her up nor paid a visit; instead, she went abroad to expand her business.
In public updates, she never once mentioned the daughter-in-law or the newborn, which starkly contrasted with her earlier high-profile posts showing off her kids.
Zhang Lan fought her way through the business world for half her life—she’s been schemed against and pulled apart before—so she had long since discarded the facade of hollow, showy respectability. The layout of this villa is her most straightforward psychological line of defense.
“After being played for too long and suffering that kind of bloody loss, who would still foolishly throw open the big door and lay bare their heart?” Once someone has been hurt completely, they can’t even be bothered to pretend at surface-level politeness.
“The two biological grandsons are the only remaining warmth within the bottom line. As for a new daughter-in-law who comes in halfway through—sorry, she’s all kept out beyond a safe distance.”
“If you nearly let people sweep away the family’s wealth accumulated over half a lifetime, then the password to your front door would probably be changed faster than anyone else’s.”
