What is confidence
People often associate confidence with success, as if only achieving fame and fortune can give one the courage to hold their head high. But true confidence is never about certainty in the outcome, but about steadfastness in the process: I may not guarantee that every effort will lead to success, but I always have the courage and determination to give my all. This attitude of not compromising on the result, but only taking responsibility for action, is the most compelling and solid form of confidence.
The essence of confidence has never been a prediction of “inevitable success,” but a firm belief in “giving my all.” Too many fall into the misconception that “success is the qualification for confidence,” placing confidence in a perfect ending. When the path ahead is uncertain, they fall into self-doubt and hesitate to take a step forward. But life itself has no absolute winning formula; every departure is accompanied by the unknown and risk. True confidence is the courage to venture into the tiger’s mountain, knowing there are tigers; it is the persistence to give your all even when the odds are slim. Just like athletes in the arena, they don’t give up fighting because their opponents are strong; like trailblazers on the entrepreneurial road, they don’t stop because the market is uncertain. Their confidence never comes from a promise of “certain victory,” but from a determination to “give it all.”
Anchored in effort, only then can we build a solid foundation of confidence amid uncertainty. Confidence is not an empty self-comfort, but the conviction accumulated through every effort. When we anchor our confidence in “effort” rather than “success,” we free ourselves from anxiety over the outcome and gain the power to control ourselves. Even if we fail to reach our goal in the end, the sweat we shed, the paths we walk, and the obstacles we overcome become medals of our growth, the foundation for our next departure. Just as Edison invented the light bulb, enduring thousands of failures without giving up, his confidence was never “certain success,” but “each attempt brings me closer to success.” It is this steadfastness in effort that allowed him to rise after countless falls and ultimately illuminate the world.
With effort as wings, we can forge stronger confidence through setbacks. On the journey of life, failure is the norm; true confidence is never about being spirited when everything goes smoothly, but about never giving up in the face of repeated defeats. When we base our confidence on effort, we won’t negate ourselves after a single failure; instead, we draw strength from setbacks, making our confidence more resilient. Like those who grow in adversity, they may lack talent or luck, but through day after day of effort, they stand up again and again after falling, eventually becoming their own light. Their confidence is the stubbornness of “I may not guarantee success, but I will never stop trying,” and the heroism of “Even if the wind rises fiercely, I will not give up on life.”
This world is never short of people pursuing success; what’s lacking is the brave who, even knowing it’s impossible, still give their all. True confidence is never arrogance about the outcome, but reverence for effort. May we all free ourselves from obsession with success, anchor ourselves in effort, build a foundation of confidence, and on the journey of life, not ask about the destination, give our all, and become our most solid support.
