Been researching where to actually retire on a reasonable budget and mountain towns keep coming up. Like, everyone dreams of Aspen but that's obviously not happening on $2,500 a month. But there are legit options if you're into that whole mountain vibe without the crazy costs.

Salida Colorado keeps getting mentioned as one of the most affordable mountain towns to retire in - rent around $1,174 for a one-bedroom, which is way below national average. They've got this nice walkable downtown with actual arts stuff going on, not just tourist traps. And you're close enough to hit slopes at Monarch Mountain if that matters to you.

Idaho Springs is another Colorado option that's even cheaper, sitting right off I-70. People seem to love the local brewery scene there and the food. Rent's like $1,146 so you'd have breathing room in your budget for other stuff.

If you want to go cheaper, Ruidoso New Mexico is apparently under $1,000 for rent. The appeal is obvious - mountain views, skiing nearby, hiking trails, and the weather stays pretty mild. Seems like one of the most affordable mountain towns if you're serious about stretching that retirement money.

Boone North Carolina in the Blue Ridge is pricier at $1,231 but people say it's worth it for the four-season scenery and college-town energy from Appalachian State. Low property taxes too.

Las Cruces New Mexico is another solid option - sits at the base of the Organ Mountains, around $992 for a one-bedroom. Year-round golfing if that's your thing. Buffalo Wyoming is more sparse and quiet, probably around $1,161 based on state averages, with good hiking and fishing nearby.

The whole point is these affordable mountain towns actually work if you're planning a $2,500 monthly budget. Not glamorous but genuinely livable. Anyone else looking at this stuff or already made the move?
