Just realized how wild some of these grocery stores are. Like, I was scrolling through stuff about expensive places to buy groceries and came across Erewhon in Southern California. Apparently Hailey Bieber's smoothie there goes for $20, and if you're feeling fancy, a single strawberry from some Japanese vendor is $19. A full grocery run can hit $1,000 easy. That's insane.
Whole Foods is supposed to be cheaper now after cutting prices on like a quarter of their stuff, but it's still pricey compared to everywhere else. Their organic bone broth is like $12.79 while the same thing at Sprouts is under $9. Still not great.
Then there's Gelson's, also in SoCal, which apparently got the worst rating possible from Consumer Reports for value. An organic avocado there costs almost $4, but you can grab a 4-pack at Target for $6. The whole chain was literally designed back in 1951 to cater to 'discerning consumers' which I guess is code for 'not budget-friendly'.
The Fresh Market is another one with 166 locations that charges premium prices for basically everything. Their milk is like $7.69 versus $6.89 elsewhere. These expensive places to buy groceries are wild.
Honestly makes sense why people are being more careful about where they shop now. Food prices jumped almost 24% between 2020 and 2024 according to the USDA, so unless you're loaded, these luxury grocery spots aren't really the move. Stick with discount chains if you want to actually save money. These expensive places to buy groceries are cool to know about but yeah, not for regular people's budgets.
