U.S. State Department: Ceasefire period with Lebanon may be extended; Israel retains right to self-defense
Jin10 Data, April 17 — The 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon took effect at 5:00 PM Eastern Time on the 16th. On the same day, the U.S. State Department issued a statement saying that the ceasefire period with Israel and Lebanon may be extended, and that Israel reserves the right to “take all necessary self-defense measures” during the ceasefire. The statement said that if substantive progress is made in the negotiations, and Lebanon can effectively demonstrate its ability to exercise national sovereignty, then by mutual agreement between the two sides, the 10-day ceasefire period may be extended. The statement said that during the ceasefire, Israel will not launch any “offensive” military operations against targets in Lebanon, but reserves the right at any time to “take all necessary self-defense measures” against planned, imminent, or ongoing attacks. And the Lebanese government will take concrete measures to prevent Hezbollah and “illegal non-state armed groups” within Lebanon from launching attacks on targets in Israel.
