Trump’s India Policy Shift – Now Getting Personal

Just 2 days ago, Indian PM Modi received a direct call from Trump.
Today, Trump personally congratulated Taranjit Sandhu (India’s former Ambassador to the US, 2020–2024) on becoming Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Delhi — with a photo from the Oval Office.
Sandhu is someone Trump knows well and trusts. He helped shape the India-US relationship during Trump’s first term.
This is not random.
After months of tariffs, tough negotiations on Russian oil, and “America First” pressure, Trump is now mixing hard bargaining with personal diplomacy.
The message is clear:
- Trade and tariffs will stay transactional.
- But at the highest level, Trump still values strong personal relationships with India.
India has placed one of America’s most trusted diplomats in charge of its capital city — a quiet but strong signal back.
The India-US relationship is moving from pure deals to a mix of hard commerce + personal trust.
2026 is going to be very interesting.
