Just found out some of those old Buffalo nickels sitting around could actually be worth serious money. Like, we're talking thousands of dollars for the right ones. I had no idea these weren't just pocket change.

So apparently the rare ones are the ones with minting errors or in perfect uncirculated condition. The 1937-D three-legged Buffalo is supposedly worth around $150k because the die got over-polished and the buffalo literally lost a leg. There's also a 1935 with doubled dies that goes for over $100k if you look close enough.

The thing is, you can't just eyeball these. You need to check the date, which mint made it, and the condition. Even then, some of the errors are so subtle you'd need magnification to spot them. Like the two-feathers nickel from 1929 where they polished away one feather by accident.

If you've got any Buffalo nickels lying around, especially from the early years or anything that looks off, might be worth getting them checked out. Uncirculated ones from the 1910s-1930s seem to be where the real nickel worth shows up. Pretty wild that something you could've found in a jar actually has that kind of value.
