Just found out there's literally a penny out there worth over a million dollars. Like, an actual penny. Apparently back in 1958 they messed up the die during production and created what's called a doubled die penny - basically the design got stamped twice on the same coin. One sold at auction for $1.136 million in 2023, which is absolutely wild.
The crazy part? The double stamped penny value varies wildly depending on which year and condition. A 1955 one goes for anywhere between $1,000 to $85,000. There's also a 1972 version that's worth like $175 to $650, and apparently some 1969 ones from San Francisco could fetch around $60,000. The 1955 is the most famous because they almost destroyed like 10 million of them at the mint but decided to just let it slide.
So now I'm paranoid I should be checking every penny I find lol. Apparently the doubling is pretty visible if you look close - the letters and numbers literally appear twice. Honestly curious if anyone's actually stumbled on one of these in circulation. Seems too good to be true but the numbers don't lie I guess.
