Just spent some time looking into affordable and safe places to live in the US, and honestly the combination of both is harder to find than you'd think. But there are definitely some solid options out there if you know where to look.
What caught my attention is how many of these safe places to live cluster in the Midwest - Ohio especially shows up a ton. Out of the top 15 most affordable and safe communities, seven are in Ohio. That's kind of wild when you think about it. New Philadelphia tops the list with an average annual cost of living around $35,500 and a violent crime rate of just 0.69 per 1,000 people. Monthly mortgage payments are hovering around $1,100 for a typical home.
There's also New Ulm, Minnesota if you want to go that route - even lower violent crime at 0.29 per 1,000, though it's slightly pricier at about $36,400 annually. Some Texas and Indiana towns made the cut too. San Elizario, Texas is interesting because the home values are the lowest I saw, averaging around $167k, with incredibly low violent crime.
What I found useful is that these aren't just random picks - they analyzed crime data from the FBI, census information, and actual cost of living expenses to find places that genuinely deliver on both affordability and safety. The data they pulled is from early 2025, so it's relatively recent.
If you're seriously considering relocating to find safer, more affordable living situations, this research gives you actual numbers to work with instead of just guessing. The smaller towns generally came in cheaper than bigger cities, which makes sense. Places like Columbus, Indiana and Trenton, Michigan show that you can find safe places to live with decent populations and still keep costs reasonable - around $40-41k annually.
Worth diving into if relocation is on your radar.
