I've always been quite conflicted about PFPs: honestly, it's often just buying an avatar plus a social gatekeeping mechanism, and once the hype fades, it’s just self-hypnosis of "who am I." But if membership could be turned into real benefits (offline events, content, product discounts, or even voting that can genuinely change rules), then at least it wouldn't be a pure attention tax. The recent debate over royalties is also quite real: creators want to make a living, but secondary sales dislike high fees that hinder liquidity, so in the end, it depends on whether the project team wants to build a brand or just do quick-flip projects. My approach is pretty simple: first check if the team has a track record of continuous delivery, then decide whether to allocate some position to try, and don't get swayed by community sentiment.
