Just found out there are actually countries that pay americans to move there and some of the amounts are wild. Like Ireland's offering up to $82k if you relocate to one of their remote islands. The catch is you have to buy a pre-1993 house that's been empty for two years and renovate it yourself, but can't turn it into an Airbnb or rental.

Spain's got this program too in a small mountain town called Ponga in Asturias - they'll give you about $3,100 per person but you need to commit to living there for five years. Only 600 people live there though and the nearest city is 90 minutes away, so it's legit small-town vibes.

Greece and Italy also have similar setups. Antikythera in Greece is giving families around $515 a month for three years plus a free new house, but there's basically no infrastructure - no banks, ATMs, or real stores. And Sardinia in Italy pays about $15k if you buy or renovate in a municipality under 3,000 people.

Honestly seems like a legit option if you're actually serious about starting over somewhere cheaper. The programs definitely have requirements but the fact that countries are literally paying people to move there is kind of a game changer for anyone thinking about relocating abroad. Anyone here actually looked into any of these?
