Just came across something pretty wild about Elon's background that I didn't fully realize before. So there's this whole thing about whether he actually came from money or not, and it turns out the story is way more complicated than most people think.

His father Errol used to tell these crazy stories about having so much wealth back in the day that they literally couldn't close their safe. Like, they'd have to hold the cash in place while closing the door, and bills would still stick out everywhere. Supposedly there was this emerald mine in Zambia that made them rich, and young Elon would apparently walk around selling emeralds on Fifth Avenue in New York. One story goes that he sold some emeralds at Tiffany for $2,000 and they showed up later marked at $24,000.

But here's where it gets interesting - Elon tells a completely different story. He basically said none of that emerald mine stuff actually happened. In a tweet a few years back, he called it out directly, saying there's zero evidence the mine ever existed and nobody has ever actually seen it. He claims his father told him about owning a share in it, but eventually admitted it was never real.

According to Elon's version, he didn't really come from money in the way people assume. Sure, his dad had an engineering business that did okay for a while, but Elon says he never got any inheritance or major financial gifts. In fact, he's been pretty clear that his father's finances got worse over time, to the point where both he and his brother Kimbal had to start supporting him financially.

So basically the whole narrative flips - instead of coming from serious wealth, Elon describes growing up middle-class transitioning to upper-middle class, but without the happiness you'd think that would bring. And now, despite all his success with Tesla and SpaceX, he's actually the one paying his father's bills.

It's one of those stories that makes you realize family wealth narratives aren't always what they seem, especially when you've got two completely different versions of the same past. Pretty wild contrast between the safe-can't-close story and the reality of him supporting his dad now.
