Slovak Prime Minister Sends Letter to Zelensky Requesting Restoration of Russian Oil Transit
On March 13th local time, Slovak Prime Minister Fico announced a letter he wrote to Ukrainian President Zelensky, requesting Ukraine to resume Russian oil transit transportation.
The letter mentioned that if the “Friendship” pipeline is damaged, the European Commission and relevant national inspection teams should be allowed to assess the extent of the damage.
Fico also called on Zelensky to accept the EU-funded repair plan and the maintenance support provided by Slovakia.
In his letter, he pointed out that Ukraine’s halt of oil and gas transit has caused significant economic losses to Slovakia.
The “Friendship” oil pipeline is a large pipeline system transporting crude oil from Russia to Central and Eastern Europe, starting in southwestern Russia, with the northern line passing through Belarus to Poland and Germany, and the southern line passing through Ukraine to the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary.
Since January 27 of this year, the Ukrainian segment of the “Friendship” pipeline has been interrupted, triggering escalating disputes between Hungary, Slovakia, and Ukraine.
Hungary and Slovakia questioned whether Ukraine was deliberately delaying the resumption of supplies, which Ukraine denied.
