Donald Trump is firing again—this time, he’s directly calling out Jerome Powell.
On April 15th, Trump made his message very blunt:
“If after the new chairman takes over, Powell still doesn’t step aside on his own, then I’ll have no choice but to fire him.”
In one sentence, he left little room for anything else, but Powell’s side is also not backing down.
His term as chairman is set to expire on May 15th, that’s true, but the issue is—Trump’s nominated successor hasn’t yet cleared the Senate.
So Powell’s stance is also firm:
“The process isn’t finished. I’ll keep serving—this is the responsibility assigned to me by law.”
The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating the Federal Reserve headquarters renovation project, and Trump immediately seized on it, saying there “may be corruption or serious management issues” involved;
This is pretty obvious—
on the surface, they’re investigating the construction, but in reality, it’s still about putting pressure on Powell, because everyone knows that the real point of disagreement is:
👉 whether to cut interest rates;
👉 when to cut;
Trump has always leaned toward a “dovish” stance, hoping to cut rates sooner to stimulate the economy, while the Fed is more cautious on its end, especially watching inflation data.
Powell’s response is also quite interesting:
He said it directly—
“The investigation isn’t over. I won’t resign. I will stay on until the conclusion is completely transparent.”
