European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said on the 19th that the EU has no intention of expanding its escort operations in the Red Sea to the Strait of Hormuz and believes that there is no legal basis under international law for the use of force against Iran. EU member states have no intention of getting involved in this war. Borrell stated that on the 16th, EU foreign ministers discussed the existing actions of EU ships ensuring safe passage in the Red Sea and exchanged views on whether to expand the scope of these actions to the Strait of Hormuz. She said that foreign ministers of member states did not have this intention because the relevant parties did not consult the EU before taking military action against Iran and are also unclear about the objectives of this war. Borrell said that according to international law, the use of force should generally be based on self-defense needs or UN Security Council authorization, but currently, the use of force against Iran does not meet these conditions. EU member states “have no interest in getting involved in this war.” ( Xinhua News Agency )
