North Korean hackers use AI technology to carry out social engineering attacks on Zerion's hot wallets
Deep Tide TechFlow News, April 15 — Zerion disclosed that part of its company's hot wallets recently suffered an AI-driven social engineering attack related to North Korean hackers, resulting in a loss of approximately $100k. Zerion stated that user funds, applications, and infrastructure were unaffected and that they proactively shut down the web application to prevent further risk.
This incident is the second similar attack this month, following the theft of $280 million from Drift Protocol, indicating that North Korean hackers are using AI to optimize social engineering tactics, mainly targeting cryptocurrency company employees and developers. The Security Alliance (SEAL) tracked that the related hacking group UNC1069 conducted several weeks of low-pressure social engineering activities via platforms such as Telegram, LinkedIn, and Slack, and used AI tools to edit images and videos to enhance attack efficiency.
