International Organization for Migration: Record Number of Deaths from Smuggling in the Mediterranean Region

The latest data from the International Organization for Migration shows that from January to February this year, the number of people attempting to illegally enter Europe via the Mediterranean has decreased, but the number of deaths or disappearances during the smuggling process has reached a record high of 655. The death toll for the same period last year was 287. NGOs and researchers attribute the sharp increase in deaths to severe weather such as storms, stricter border controls, and obstacles to maritime rescue operations. (CCTV News)
