In 2025, the National Natural Science Foundation funded a total of 58,800 projects of various types, with funding of 370.69 billion yuan. Pilot implementation of major non-consensus projects was carried out. A joint fund for innovation and development of private enterprises was established, and in team-based projects, dedicated tracks were set up for young teams. For the first time, a “Scientific Tools” track was introduced in Youth Science Fund projects (Categories A and B), and globally oriented scientific research funding was implemented in depth.
The National Natural Science Foundation of China recently convened the fourth plenary meeting of the ninth council in Beijing. This is what reporters learned at the meeting.
It is understood that over the past year, the National Natural Science Foundation of China strengthened the system-based planning of basic research, reshaped the talent-funding pattern of science funds, strengthened science and technology strategic consulting, deepened global scientific exchange and cooperation, and strengthened the construction of scientific research integrity. The Foundation has adhered to directing valuable scientific and technological resources to frontline researchers with the most innovative vitality, and has successfully completed all annual funding and management tasks.
Nong Xiankang, Director of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, said that in 2026, it will strengthen the strategic, forward-looking, and system-based planning for basic research, further deepen the reform of science funds, continuously enhance funding effectiveness, optimize the talent-funding system, build a team of “elite soldiers” for basic research, expand the depth and breadth of diversified investments, expand international science and technology exchange and cooperation, improve the style of meetings and academic conduct, and create a fair and just environment for project review. It will foster a good scientific research ecosystem and better play the fundamental and leading role of science funds in the national innovation system, promote high-quality development of basic research, and strongly support the building of a country strong in science and technology.
