Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Bayramov announced on the 6th that Azerbaijan has decided to withdraw all diplomatic personnel from Iran.

Bayramov said that after Nakhchivan, an Azerbaijani exclave, was attacked by drones from within Iran, President Aliyev of Azerbaijan decided to withdraw all diplomatic personnel from Iran, including the diplomatic personnel of the Embassy in Tehran and the diplomatic personnel of the Consulate General in Tabriz. Currently, the related evacuation work is underway.

Bayramov said that in response to the incident, Azerbaijan has taken diplomatic measures, including sending a protest note to Iran and having a phone call between himself and Iran’s foreign minister. Iran has promised to conduct a thorough investigation of the incident, and the Azerbaijani side expects the results.

In a statement released on the 5th, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that on that day, the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic was attacked by drones from within Iran. One of the drones hit the airport terminal, causing damage to airport buildings and injuring 2 civilians. After the attack, Nakhchivan International Airport was closed and all flights were temporarily suspended. Iranian media reported on the 5th that Iran’s Armed Forces General Staff denied that Iranian armed forces had deployed drones to Azerbaijan.

The Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic is a part of Azerbaijan that is geographically separated from the main territory, bordering Armenia, Turkey, and Iran. ( Xinhua News Agency )
