The UK will hold a video summit on the Strait of Hormuz issue today, with over thirty countries participating.
The UK will hold a video summit on the Strait of Hormuz today, with representatives from 35 countries attending to assess diplomatic and political plans to reopen this critical waterway.
On the occasion of this meeting, U.S. President Donald Trump is sharply criticizing European allies, urging them to “start learning to fight for themselves.” In a 20-minute nationwide speech on Wednesday evening, Trump downplayed America’s dependence on the Strait of Hormuz and the global impact of the actual closure of this route.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced on Wednesday that Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper “will chair the meeting, bringing these countries together for the first time. We will evaluate all feasible diplomatic and political measures to restore freedom of navigation.”
A British official said that the UK “is continuing to work with the United States on this initiative,” and other key partners, including the Gulf Cooperation Council, are also involved.
Sunak stated that military planners will also participate, “studying how to coordinate our forces to ensure the Strait is restored to open and safe conditions after the conflict ends.”
However, the British leader warned, “This is not an easy task.”
