Just realized a lot of people still don't know the difference between updating SASSA details for permanent grants versus the SRD grant – they're completely different processes, which is kind of annoying honestly.
So if you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child support, whatever), you basically can't do anything online. You have to physically go to a SASSA office, fill out the Payment Method Change Form, bring your ID and recent bank statements, and wait like 3 weeks for them to verify everything with the bank. And there's this annoying deadline – if you don't submit before the 15th of the month, they'll keep using your old details for another month. Learned that the hard way.
But here's the thing – if you're on the SRD R370 grant, it's actually way simpler because the whole system is online. You go on the SASSA SRD portal, enter your ID number, they send you a secure link via SMS, and you just update your bank details through that link. Takes a few days to verify but it's way less hassle than going to an office.
Oh, and they're pretty strict about one thing – the account has to be in YOUR name only. No joint accounts, no using someone else's bank account. If you try that, they'll just reject it.
Changing your phone number is also different depending on which grant you're on. For SRD, there's an online contact portal where you enter your ID and they send you an OTP to confirm the new number. For permanent grants, you either call their helpline (0800 60 10 11) or just go to the office. But honestly, the online method seems way faster if you can get it to work.
One warning though – there are fake websites pretending to be SASSA, especially for SRD payment method changes. Always make sure you're on the actual official portal before entering any info.
