Just realized a lot of SASSA beneficiaries don't know how to properly update their banking details, and honestly it's kind of important especially before the December payments kick in. If you're getting a permanent grant like old age or disability, you can't just do it online—you actually have to go in person to your nearest SASSA office. Bring your ID, proof of your new bank account (a recent bank statement works), and fill out their payment method change form. They'll send it to the bank for verification which takes like 21 working days, so if you want it sorted for next month's payment, get it done before the 15th.
For the SRD R370 grant though, it's different. You can update your payment method entirely online through their portal, which is way easier. Just enter your ID number, they'll text you a link, click it and add your new bank details. Takes a few days to verify but at least you don't have to sit in an office queue. One thing though—whatever account you're using has to be in your name only. SASSA won't pay into joint accounts or anything like that.
Also don't sleep on updating your cellphone number if you've changed it. For permanent grants, call 0800 60 10 11 or visit the office. For SRD, there's an online contact details page where you can update it yourself—they'll send you an OTP to verify. And seriously, use the official SASSA website only because there are fake sites out there trying to scam people. Has anyone actually successfully updated their details online, or is the office visit still the safest bet?
