So I had this weird thing happen where my phone kept showing up as private when I called people. Nobody was picking up, and a friend finally asked why I was always calling with a private number. Turns out I had no idea it was even happening.
Turned out there were a few reasons this could happen, and honestly it took me digging through settings to figure out how to remove private number from my phone. If you're dealing with the same thing, here's what actually works.
For Android, the fix usually lives in your phone settings but the exact location depends on your phone brand. On most phones, you go into the Phone app, hit settings or call settings, then look for something about caller ID or supplementary services. You're basically telling your network to show your actual number instead of hiding it. Choose show number or network default, and your carrier should update it. If you've got a Realme or Samsung, the menus might be slightly different, but the idea is the same - find caller ID settings and switch it on.
If that doesn't work, sometimes there's an advanced protection feature blocking it. Check your security settings and see if something is restricting your call data. Or just try clearing the cache on your phone app and restart. That actually fixes a lot of sync issues between your phone and your carrier.
For iPhone, Apple moved things around in newer versions. You go to Settings, then Apps, find Phone, and toggle on Show My Caller ID. Pretty straightforward. If you've got multiple lines, you have to do this for each one separately. If the option isn't even showing up, your carrier might be controlling it from their end, which happens with some networks.
Now here's the thing - sometimes you do all this and your caller ID still shows as private. That's usually a carrier network issue, not your phone. Try using USSD codes to talk directly to your network. Dial *31# to make your number visible on all calls. On some networks you can also dial *#31# to check if your caller ID is restricted. If nothing else works, reset your network settings completely. This wipes your saved WiFi passwords and Bluetooth stuff too, so just be aware.
Other things that can cause this: privacy apps with deep permissions, old SIM cards that don't play well with newer networks, or switching between different network types. If you're roaming internationally, the caller ID signal can get lost passing through different networks. But honestly, if you work through these steps and check your carrier settings, you should be able to figure out how to remove private number and get your actual number showing up on calls again.
