Just realized a lot of people are struggling to update their SASSA banking details, especially with the December payments coming up. If you're on a permanent grant like old age or disability, you literally have to go in person to your nearest SASSA office—can't do it online no matter what. You'll need your ID, proof of your new bank account (bank statement from the last 3 months works), and they'll give you a form to fill out. The whole process takes up to 21 working days after you submit, so if you're thinking about changing your banking details, better do it before the 15th of the month or you'll miss that month's payment.
Now if you're on the SRD R370 grant, that's a different story—everything's online through their portal, which is actually way easier. You just enter your ID number, they send you a link via SMS, and you update your banking details from there. Takes a few days to a week for verification. The key thing is your account has to be in your name only, no joint accounts or anything like that, or SASSA won't process it.
Also don't forget about updating your cellphone number if it changed. For permanent grants, call them at 0800 60 10 11 or visit the office. For SRD, use their online contact portal—enter your ID and application ID, put in your new number, and they'll send you an OTP to verify. Honestly, the in-person route is usually safest if you're dealing with complicated changes, even though the wait times can be rough. Just make sure you're using the official SASSA website and not some random third-party site claiming to help with this stuff.
