Montana utility seeks new rules for data centers using 5 MW+

NorthWestern Energy (NWE) has filed an application with the Montana Public Service Commission to establish new rules for providing electricity to large new loads, such as data centers, consuming 5 megawatts or more. The proposed Large New Load Tariff aims to ensure existing customers are protected from cost increases and adverse impacts while supporting Montana’s energy future and economic growth. This framework includes requirements for minimum service commitment periods, demand and energy billing, performance assurance, and termination cost provisions, promoting a fair and accountable system for energy-intensive operations.
