Just spent some time digging into affordable housing markets and honestly, if you're looking for the cheapest place to live in the us without sacrificing safety, there are actually some solid options most people sleep on. The data from early 2025 showed some interesting patterns - turns out Ohio dominates the list with seven cities making the cut, which was kind of surprising to me.
New Philadelphia, Ohio came out on top with an average home value around $186k and annual cost of living hitting $35,549. The violent crime rate was super low at 0.69 per 1,000 residents. New Ulm, Minnesota was another standout with even lower violent crime (0.29 per 1,000) and similar affordability. San Elizario, Texas had the lowest violent crime rate at just 0.10 per 1,000, with home values under $170k.
What struck me most was how many of these towns had populations under 20k but still maintained decent livability scores. Places like Columbus, Indiana and Trenton, Michigan seemed to balance affordability with better amenities. Monthly mortgage costs ranged from about $1,100 to $1,800 depending on the location.
If you're genuinely trying to find the cheapest place to live in the us that doesn't feel like a compromise on safety, these Midwest and smaller state options are worth looking into. The property crime rates varied more than violent crime, but overall the combination was pretty solid. Worth checking out if you're considering a move and want to stretch your budget further.
