Just saw Elon Musk clarify something on Twitter that apparently needed straightening out. Dude's been getting labeled as Afrikaner for years, but he went on record saying nope—he's actually from British and English background. Pretty interesting timing for him to address this, especially since people keep making assumptions about his heritage based on growing up in South Africa.

What caught my attention is how he tied it to J.R.R. Tolkien, the LOTR author, who was also born in South Africa but came from English parents. Musk's apparently a huge Tolkien fan—like, obsessed enough to reference it on social media regularly. There's even some story about how Tolkien's work played into his whole thing with Grimes back in the day.

The whole thing started because some blog post was floating around describing him as growing up in an Afrikaner family, and I guess that bothered him enough to jump on Twitter and set the record straight. Makes sense—there's a real difference between Afrikaner heritage (Dutch, German, French descendants from centuries back) and English South African background. Musk was born in Pretoria in 1971, and yeah, his childhood in South Africa was apparently pretty rough—the guy's talked about some intense wilderness survival camp when he was 12. But culturally and ancestrally, totally different lane from what people assume.

Interesting how these identity details matter to him. Guess when you're that visible, every assumption gets attached to your name whether you want it or not.
