China's electricity generation increase reaches 7 times that of the United States, influencing AI competition.

Centered on research and development of artificial intelligence (AI), China is enhancing its power generation capacity and catching up with the United States. The increase in China’s power generation capacity in 2025 is considered to be 7 times that of the United States. China uses low-cost electricity as a weapon to make up for the weakness that its semiconductor performance is not as good as that of the United States. Power supply capacity could end up determining the AI competition between China and the United States.

A forecast released by the Chinese government in December 2025 shows that in 2025, the power generation capacity of newly built power stations in China, and others, is expected to be about 470 gigawatts. Data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) shows that, during the same period, the United States added 64 gigawatts of power generation capacity.

China’s power generation capacity surpassed that of the United States in 2013 and reached 2.5 times that of the United States in 2024. In the increase for 2025 as well, China is ahead of the United States, further widening the gap between China and the United States. The Chinese government expects that by 2030, its power generation capacity will increase to 1.5 times that of 2024.

The Nikkei Inc. and the Financial Times merged in November 2015 to become the same media group. The alliance formed by two newspaper companies—Japan and the UK—both of which were founded in the 19th century, is moving forward under the banner of “high-quality, the strongest economic journalism,” promoting cooperation in a wide range of areas such as joint special reports. This time, as part of that effort, the two newspapers exchange articles between their Chinese websites.
