Kim Yo-jong, a minister of the Workers’ Party of Korea’s Central Committee, made a statement on April 6.

The statement said that South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, on April 6, claimed that the incident in which a South Korean drone entered North Korea’s airspace was regrettable, and expressed regret that irresponsible actions and risky behavior had led to unnecessary military tensions.

Kim Yo-jong said it is a truly welcome and wise move that the South Korean president expressed regret in person and discussed measures to prevent the incident from happening again. Kim Jong-un, General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea and Chairman of the State Affairs Commission, said that this reflects the posture of an open-minded and generous person.

Kim Yo-jong said that South Korea should not just say that peace and stability come first; it should take its own security into account. It should stop any adventurous and provocative actions toward North Korea, and it should also give up any attempts to initiate contact.

Kim Yo-jong said that the other side should remember once again: if a provocation that infringes on North Korea’s sovereignty happens again, as it has already been warned, the other side will have to pay an unbearable price.

According to a report from North Korea on January 10, a spokesperson for the General Staff Department of the Korean People’s Army said in a statement on January 9 that after the Oct. 2024 drone incursion over Pyongyang, South Korea, at the start of the new year, again launched drones to violate North Korea’s airspace, carrying out another serious provocation. Subsequently, South Korea formed a joint military-police investigation special working group to investigate the incident. On the morning of April 6, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung expressed regret to North Korea over the “drone incursion incident.” (CCTV reporter Dong Haitao)
