Trump Makes More Statements Escalating Tensions with Iran: "One Night Is Enough for the Whole Country"
Donald Trump’s harsh statements as the U.S. president about the ongoing war with Iran have increased concerns in global markets.
Mr. Trump, alluding to Tuesday midnight, said that large-scale attacks on bridges, sewer systems, and energy infrastructure in Iran are in the plan. The U.S. leader suggested that a potential campaign could take place in as little as four hours, saying: “All bridges in Iran will be destroyed; all power plants will be disabled.”
Although Mr. Trump said that military options against Iran are still being considered, he said he does not want to target infrastructure, saying: “I hope I won’t have to carry out an attack like that.”
However, his statement that “If necessary, the entire country could be disabled just after one night” has drawn attention. The U.S. president also defended ongoing negotiations with Iran as “goodwill,” saying that the proposals being put forward are an important step but not enough. Mr. Trump reiterated that the deadline for Iran will not be extended, and that Tuesday is the final deadline.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that military preparations are being accelerated, adding that the most intense attacks against Iran will take place today and will continue to escalate into tomorrow. Meanwhile, according to reports citing U.S. officials, the U.S. military is continuing its preparations, especially for operations that could target Iran’s energy infrastructure.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is said to have urged Mr. Trump to oppose a ceasefire agreement during the meeting between the two on Sunday.
Mr. Trump, while saying that Iran possessing new nuclear weapons is a “real war crime,” also said he is not worried about war-crimes allegations directed at him.
In addressing U.S. public sentiment about the war, Trump admitted that Americans want the country to return to safety, while criticizing Iran’s current position and saying, “They don’t want to back down right now, but they will back down.”
