Trump made an interesting statement. He’s arguing that we should strengthen competition among television media outlets as a way to counter the fake news problem.
According to Jin10’s report, he apparently supports a merger proposal like “Nexter Tegna.” At first glance, it may sound contradictory, but his logic is actually simple. It’s based on the idea that if competition increases, the quality of reporting should improve.
What’s interesting is the point Trump makes—that people opposing this policy may not truly understand the real intent. He seems to believe that eventually, even the opposition will come to recognize the value of this strategy.
The idea that restructuring the media industry can become a measure against fake news is certainly one perspective. If the competitive environment changes, news organizations will also need to improve the quality of their reporting in order to survive. Trump is pushing for an early realization of this deal, but whether it will actually lead to a solution for the fake news problem is likely to depend on market reactions.
