On April 5, a report titled “A woman from Guangdong was robbed of more than 80k yuan in cash, hit the robber with her car, resulting in 1 death, and was found not guilty,” triggered a large number of reposts and comments online. Some reports claim that the incident happened on April 5, while others say it happened in 2024, 2023, and so on; related topics once topped the trending search list.

Nandu N Video reporter inquiry found that the case actually took place in July 2008. The court issued its final judgment in 2009, and it was not an event from the recent period. In addition, the female driver involved was the victim in that case, not the defendant.

Some reports say “A robbery occurred in Guangdong on April 5,” but this was actually a case from many years ago.

Nandu reporters verified that the case mentioned in the above-mentioned viral video and tweets was not one that occurred in recent years; it was in fact a case from July 2008. At the time, a female driver in Foshan had her car windshield smashed by someone in the early morning. Her handbag, which contained more than 80k yuan in cash and receipts and was placed in the front passenger seat, was stolen. She then drove to chase and caught up with three robbers, knocking them down with her car, resulting in one of the three dying.

In 2009, the court issued final judgments for the other two robbers, sentencing them to fixed-term imprisonment of between eleven and twelve years for robbery. Nandu reporters noted that the female driver involved was the victim in that case, not the defendant. There is no such claim as “found not guilty” stated in the viral video and tweets.

The court held that after the criminals carried out the robbery and prepared to flee, they were still within the victim’s field of vision; therefore, the robbery act was still considered to be in progress. The driver’s act of hitting the criminals was a form of justifiable self-defense.
