(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump on Friday unveiled a proposed $1.5 trillion defense budget for fiscal year 2027 — the largest military spending request in American history — while simultaneously demanding steep reductions to domestic programs.

Budget fact sheets published by the White House ahead of the formal annual proposal outline $1.15 trillion in discretionary defense spending, supplemented by $350 billion in mandatory resources, combining to reach the unprecedented $1.5 trillion total.

Alongside the military buildup, the administration is pushing for a 10% cut to discretionary non-defense spending — equivalent to roughly $73 billion — as Trump doubles down on rolling back domestic outlays while aggressively expanding the country’s defense posture.

The proposal arrives as the White House faces intensifying political headwinds over the administration’s ongoing conflict with Iran.

While Capitol Hill is widely expected to block or substantially water down many of the proposed domestic reductions, the budget blueprint is nonetheless poised to anchor the coming fiscal showdown in Congress and send a clear signal of the administration’s priorities as November’s midterm elections draw closer.
